8 Indian Secrets For Healthy And Luxurious Hair

Perhaps you noticed that Indian women always have lusciously long hair. Indian secrets of beauty have been passed by word of mouth since ancient times. Indians believe that you can find answers to all questions about beauty and health in nature.

Here are 8 Indian hair-care secrets that will help you grow luxurious braids:

#1. Rinse with Cold Water
You should replace hot water with cold water while washing your hair. Rinsing with cold water increases blood circulation and results in faster hair growth.

#2. Aloe Vera Juice
Our grannies used Aloe Vera as a perfect moisturizer for all skin types. It will take care of your hair and scalp as well. All you need is to put freshly squeezed Aloe Vera juice on the hair roots and rub it in gently with your fingers.

#3. Coconut Oil Massage
Pour a little coconut oil in a bowl, heat it for 20 seconds, then apply it on the scalp. Gently massage the skin with your fingers, so that the oil penetrates to the roots of the hair. The oil nourishes the scalp and cleans the follicles from the accumulated fat. Leave it for 30 minutes, then wash your hair with shampoo and rinse. Repeat the procedure once a week.

#4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
ACV is a multi-purpose remedy which can take care of your hair. It stimulates the hair follicles and helps you to get rid of dandruff. All you need to do is to replace your shampoo with ACV once a week.

#5. Protein Hair Mask
Hair loss is often caused by a lack of protein in the diet. This trick will restore the amount of protein in your body and revitalize the hair.

Take two eggs, separate the whites from the yolks, blend the whites and apply the resulting substance on the roots. After 30 minutes, wash with shampoo - your hair will glow!

#6. Essential Oils in Addition to Coconut Oil
Indians use a lot of essential oils for hair care. The best varieties are almond, jojoba, rosemary, lavender and thyme. They wash out the accumulated fat in the pores and repair the damaged follicles.

#7. Less Washing
To make your hair healthy and glowing you should avoid harsh chemicals contained in most beauty products, as they change the normal pH level of your skin. Reduce washing your hair to 1-2 times a week.

#8. Panthenol Hair Mask
D-panthenol is a synthetic vitamin B5. Once absorbed into the skin, it normalizes the state of the epidermis. Among its properties: the restoration of hair bulbs and the treatment of hair loss.

Don’t Like Those Grey Hairs? Try This Trick With Potato Peels

Got grey hairs? You might be able to reduce them with just some potato peels!

Grey hair – we all have to deal with it at some point in our lives. Some people get their first grey hairs in their early twenties, while others go without them for a very long time. Once you’ve spotted your very first grey hair, however, you know there’s no turning back. They’re definitely here to stay! You can accept it and rock those grey hairs, or if you’re not comfortable with that yet, you can also do all kinds of things to get rid of them.

This trick with potato peels can help you to reduce those grey hairs before you know it!

Dye
Dying your hair is quite an intensive activity. You can do it at home or go to a salon to let someone else do it for you, but either way, it takes up a lot of time and money. Plus, you have to keep doing it if you want your hair to keep looking good. Luckily, there’s now a new trick out there that’s much less expensive and at least as effective as hair dye. All you need for this trick is a bag of potatoes! Potato peels contain an enzyme called catecholase.

This enzyme is used in cosmetic products aimed at evening out skin tones. However, while it evens out your skin this enzyme can also add a little colour to your hair! The potato peels won’t damage your hair, which can’t be said about most of the chemical hair dyes, so it’s worth a try, right?

Instructions
Colouring your hair with potato peels sounds completely ridiculous, of course, but it works! And it’s super easy as well. Follow these steps to get it done:
  • Boil a couple of potatoes for about 20 minutes.
  • Remove the peels from the potatoes and blitz them up in a blender (the peels, not the potatoes).
  • Wash your hair like you normally would and apply the potato peel mush to your hair afterwards.
  • Let the potato peel mush sit and soak for at least 15 minutes and then rinse it out with water.
  • Treat your hair with a hair mask or conditioner to get rid of the potato smell.
  • That’s it!

Get Rid Of Gray Hair Using Only 1 Ingredient

The graying of hair is the natural phenomenon that is usually associated with the process of aging. The hair becomes grayish when the cells that produce color fail to produce pigments. Generally speaking, Caucasians notice the first signs of gray hair in their mid-30s, African-Americans when they enter their mid-40s and Asians in their early 40s.

More than 50% of all men and women have a large number of gray hairs when they reach their 50s.

It is very likely that you know how to solve the problem with gray hair on a permanent basis. However, if you are not a fan of the idea of using dye and you are interested to get rid of gray hair and bring back the natural color of your hair, we will suggest one efficient ingredient that can accelerate this process and cover the unpleasant gray hairs.

How To Use Rosemary For Treating Hair Loss

We all desire healthy and lush hair, so hair loss or progressive thinning of the hair can affect us quite badly. Hair loss (alopecia) is more common in men, and can be a result of many factors but according to a research rosemary can be used effectively for treating alopecia.

Alopecia – Common Causes
Alopecia can be caused by several factors such as: genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, skin conditions, thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, chronic stress, harsh dyes, side effects of certain medications as well as other causes

So it is therefore important to treat the underlying cause of the hair loss and not just the symptom itself. There is also natural hair loss which often occurs due to aging process when the hair follicles begin to shrink and produce thinner hair with a shorter life span.

Rosemary Oil for Treating Hair Loss – The Research
A randomized controlled trial tested 100 men with androgenetic alopecia – male pattern baldness. In the trial, 50 of the men were treated with 2% topical minoxidil which is a synthetic drug used to stimulate hair growth. The other 50 men were treated with rosemary oil.

The men in both groups were tested with hair count analysis which is the most objective measure of treatment for baldness.

After three months, neither of the groups showed any significant increase in hair counts.

But when tested at six months, the researchers found that both treatments significantly increased the overall hair counts among the men.

This means that rosemary oil is as effective as minoxidil – but safer. The researchers found adverse effects such as scalp itching – significantly more frequent among the minoxidil group. But it’s important to mention that scalp itching was found among the rosemary group as well.

If you have sensitive skin you may not tolerate rosemary oil as well as others but this may be resolved by simply diluting the oil with a carrier oil.

How to Use Rosemary for Promoting Hair Growth
Although it’s not clear how rosemary works for hair loss, applying it to the scalp increases blood circulation. So how can you use rosemary to stimulate hair growth? Here are several options:

1. Daily Shampooing
For nourishing your hair on a daily basis add rosemary essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner. Use 10-12 drops of oil for every ounce of shampoo or conditioner.

Alternatively you can use the herb itself. Place approximately 1 qt. of distilled water in a large saucepan. Bring the water to a boil and stir 1-2 large handfuls of dried rosemary leaves into the boiling water (if you use fresh rosemary you need to double the amount of herb as dried herb is more concentrated).

Turn off the heat and allow the rosemary to steep in the water for at least 5 hours. Pour the rosemary infusion into a dark-colored glass jar and store it in your refrigerator. Use the rosemary infusion to make basic rosemary shampoo by mixing 1/4 cup of the infusion with 1 cup of liquid Castile soap.

2. Daily Massage
For a daily massage to stimulate new growth, add 3-4 drops of rosemary oil to one tablespoon of carrier oil such as jojoba oil. Rub into the scalp for a few minutes and leave for at least 30 minutes. You can also combine it with peppermint essential oil (which can also promote hair growth).

3. Hot Oil Treatment Once or Twice a Week
Once a week use a hot oil treatment for your hair and scalp. Mix a few tablespoons of a carrier oil (such as coconut oil) and a few drops of rosemary essential oil (about 3-4 drops of rosemary oil to one tablespoon of carrier oil) in a small glass jar that can be sealed. Place the jar in a bowl of hot water until the oil is warm.

Gradually massage the entire amount using your fingertips into your dry scalp for several minutes. Make sure to apply a little blend down the length of your hair until the ends. Wrap your hair with plastic wrap or plastic shower cap, and then cover it with a very warm damp towel.

Replace with another warm towel once the first one has cooled. Leave the blend for at least 30-45. You can stay with it overnight, and if you do this, remove the plastic wrap and sleep with a dry towel on your pillow to absorb the oil. Then rinse and lightly shampoo your hair with a chemical free shampoo. Follow with conditioner if you want.

10 Tips That’ll Save You the Trouble of Washing Your Hair Every Day

Washing your hair too frequently can cause more harm than good according to Lynne Goldberg, Director of the Boston Medical Center Hair Clinic. Constant washing causes your sebaceous glands to produce more fat. As a result, you get into a real vicious circle.

Watch your menu
To ensure that your hair stays clean longer, remove any fatty or fried dishes from your diet. The same goes for sugar, white bread, and canned foods. Replace these products with fruits and vegetables, dairy, lean meats, and nuts. This will help reduce the sebaceous glands’ activity.

Use dry shampoos
To conceal greasy shine, divide your hair into strands and apply dry shampoo to the roots like a hairspray, from a distance of 8-10 inches. If the shampoo is in the form of talcum powder, apply it to the roots. Wait for ten minutes, and then comb your hair. Dry shampoo will create a shell around the greasy strands that will, for a time, make your hair look clean.

Don’t neglect accessories
If you have a fringe, a headscarf can provide interesting hairstyling options. All you’ll need to do is wash your fringe, pin it up, and disguise it in some way. Headscarfs look good with collected or loose hair. They can also become a real salvation for those with short hairdos. Greasy hair can be further concealed by means of various hair pins or headbands with flowers.

Pay attention to water temperature
When washing your hair, use warm or tepid water. Hot water increases the amount of fat secreted by the skin. After you’ve washed your hair, it’s best to let it dry naturally.

Put your hair into braids
Braids of any type do a good job of disguising greasy hair roots. The thicker the weave, the better. We advise you to do a slight backcomb at the crown to conceal the more visible part of the unwashed hair. Make sure the braid doesn’t turn out smooth. A small amount of sticking-out hair will help hide the staleness.

Comb your hair before bedtime
Comb your hair before going to bed. Once you’ve settled on your pillow, pull your hair back in such a way as to arrange it along the upper edge of the pillow. If the length allows, make a quick ponytail or a loose braid.

Change your parting
Switch your parting from one side to the other, or replace a straight parting with a diagonal one. The reason for doing this is simple: our hair gets used to being arranged in a certain fashion, which leads to loss of volume at the roots. Also, it tends to become dirtiest along the parting line. Shifting the parting gives your hair volume, a new look, and an appearance of cleanliness.

Avoid flat hairdos
Try not to give preference to smooth and sleek hairstyles: they’ll make your hair look even more messy and greasy.

The best option would be to slightly backcomb the hair at the roots to achieve extra volume, and then secure it in a shell or a bun.

Wash your brushes
Don’t forget to clean your styling tools regularly to prevent residues of surface skin fat, conditioner, and styling substances from gluing your hair together. Brushes and combs should be washed once a week in warm water with shampoo or soap.

The right way to wash your hair
  • Dry wet hair with a T-shirt instead of a towel to smooth your frizzy hair.
  • Don’t scrub your scalp. Use your fingertips to gently massage shampoo into your hair.
  • Roots should never, ever be conditioned.
  • Wring out your hair before applying hair conditioner.

9 Smart Ideas on How to Wash Your Hair Less Often

We feel disappointed when our hair gets dirty too soon, so we feel the need to wash it more often. But this can work against us: the follicles are actively stimulated and the next day our hair appears unclean again.

Bright Side has found some great ideas to help you wake up with clean and gorgeous hair!

Use boiled or regenerated water

Regular tap water can be too hard, affecting your hair’s style. Swill your hair either in boiled or regenerated water, and it will still be clean the next day. The temperature should be about 38°С.

Ease off on the products

Nourishing products for thin and brittle hair can make it heavier and dirtier if they are used incorrectly. Carefully consider measures to avoid this: hair oils should be used a couple of times a week, while sprays and wheys can be used as needed in small amounts.

Brush your hair less often — and use a comb

When we brush our hair too often or touch it all the time it leads to the follicles working more actively. As a result, our hair gets dirty faster. Try to brush your hair less often, and use a comb instead of an ordinary paddle brush. Try to avoid touching your scalp with the comb or brush.

Natural styles

All hair-styling products speed up the process of hair getting unclean. If you want to make a ponytail or a bun, let it be more natural. If you don’t try to make every curl lie in perfect order with loads of hair spray, the next day you will have shining and clean hair.

Use shampoo without SLS

9 Smart Ideas on How to Wash Your Hair Less Often

Shampoos containing SLS have been proved to be safe for people, but if you still feel that they dry your skin and your hair gets dirty too fast, you can use SLS-free versions. Such products are less foaming, but they work well for removing dirt from your hair. You just need to use them properly.

Lower the temperature

A dryer, curling iron, or straightener can also be the reason for unclean hair. High temperatures make the oil glands produce more secretions for the skin’s protection. 150°С-180°С is the perfect temperature for styling.

Head skin peeling

Peeling helps to remove dead cells and stubborn dirt. It also strengthens the follicles and stimulates hair growth. You can use homemade scrubs with proper ingredients.

Change your pillowcase more often

Pillowcases absorb the oils you use for your hair and skin. This makes them a good ground for malignant bacteria reproduction, making your hair unclean. Pillowcases should be changed at least once a week.

Protect your hair from freezing cold and heat

Wear a hat both in summer and in winter. Freezing cold and heat make your skin produce sebum as a method of protection. As a result, your hair roots become greasy. The ends, on the contrary, become too dry and brittle. You need to take care of your hair in every season.

7 Oils To Apply To Your Hair That Will Fix All Of Your Hair Problems

These natural oils will add moisture and shine to your hair, they will nourish the scalp helping to reduce dry, flaky skin,  they will help to get rid of dandruff, and they will aid faster and healthier hair growth – all without the use of expensive cosmetics or dangerous chemicals.

To apply any of the treatments below, massage a bit of room temperature or slightly warmed oil to your roots and scalp working it down to the tips like you would with conditioner. Put on a shower cap and let it soak in for about half an hour, then wash your hair using an all-natural shampoo.

For thick unruly hair try Coconut, Argan, Avocado or Extra-virgin olive oil. For thinner hair that needs more life try Pomegranate Seed or Rosemary Oil. Jojoba oil is great for all hair types.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is one of the most powerful oils in the world. Not only does coconut have that great “vacation-in-the-Caribbean” smell, it’s also great for your hair.

Coconut oil is high in vitamin E and other nutrients, and your hair can absorb them all. The result will be hair that is thicker, shiner, healthier and has stronger roots. It also contains lauric and capric acid, which have amazing antimicrobial powers – meaning it will make your hair and scalp healthier and prevent dandruff, itchy scalp and infections.

To experience the full benefits of coconut oil, make sure you purchase unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil.

Argan Oil
Argan oil is the most expensive of the hair oils on this list, but ask anyone who uses it and you’ll hear that it’s worth every penny. It contains lots of vitamin E, omega 3 and 9 fatty acids, and antioxidants, all of which do amazing things for damaged, dry, coarse or otherwise unmanageable hair.

There are several smoothing products on the market containing Argan oil, but you’ll get the best results applying it using the method at the top of this list.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
The same oil that you likely use for cooking and salad dressing can be used as a deep moisturizing treatment and to promote hair growth. Massaging your scalp with olive oil will promote scalp health and improve circulation, while fighting off bacteria and leaving you with softer smoother hair.

Olive oil also makes an excellent, all-natural alternative to shaving cream.

Pomegranate Seed Oil
For fine or thinning hair, Pomegranate seed oil can work miracles. It contains high amounts of punicic acid, which revitalizes your hair leaving it looking thick and shiny. It’s also a great protector against chemicals and other environmental damage. Pomegranate seed oil is very thick and somewhat expensive, you can mix it with extra-virgin olive oil to make it last longer and get the benefits of both.

Rosemary Essential Oil
Thinning hair tends to hold in more dirt and toxins; rosemary essential oil is great for cleansing and it also contains loads of vitamin B, iron and calcium. It has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for thinning and brittle hair, plus it has been scientifically proven to prevent premature graying.

Rosemary essential oil should be diluted with a carrier oil (such as extra virgin olive oil) before use.

Avocado Oil
Avocado oil, like avocados themselves, contains proteins, healthy fats, amino acids and vitamins A, D, E and B6. The proteins will help fill in damaged airs in your hair’s cuticles, repairing damage that’s already been done and preventing future breakage and frizz. Avocado oil is strong and thick, so it is most effective when used on medium to thick hair.

Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil isn’t actually an oil, it’s a liquefied wax that is extracted from a shrub native to the southwestern US.  Jojoba oil is high in vitamins A, E and D and is great for all hair types. It can be found in several all-natural shampoos and hair products, but like the other oils, it’s most effective on its own. Jojoba oil helps repair damage to your hair and promotes new, healthy hair growth.

Homemade Natural “Wet” Dry Shampoo Spray

For most hair types, washing it daily is not necessary. In fact, washing your hair with harsh, commercial shampoos on a daily basis will strip your hair of its natural oils.  This will cause hair to be drier and more prone to breakage. Your hair needs to produce natural oils in order to keep your scalp and hair moisturized. Instead of washing your hair daily, try using a dry shampoo.

Why Dry Shampoo?
The whole premise for a “dry’ shampoo is to  put an oil absorbing substance (like arrowroot ) on the oily parts of your hair to absorb the oil. This is the perfect solution if you do not have time to wash your hair. Dry shampoos are also very helpful for styling hair  and need it to hold a certain style. It’s especially great for very fine hair that refuses to hold any type of style without the use of hairsprays and gels.  You can use arrowroot or cornstarch by itself and apply it to your hair with a makeup brush, then comb the powder through your hair and style as usual.  A wet/dry shampoo works the same way but it’s easier to apply, less messy, and super easy to make.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot
  • 1/4 cup witch hazel
  • essential oil
  • spray bottle

Add a the quarter cup of arrowroot powder to the warm water.

Stir to completely dissolve the arrowroot. Make sure there are no clumps.

Add the 1/4 cup of witch hazel to the arrowroot mixture. The witch hazel will help the mixture dry faster once in your hair.

Add a few drops of essential oils to the mixture. This is optional. The essential oils are primarily for fragrance, but you may like to opt for an essential oil that also helps with any hair problems you have.

For example, rosemary has been found to stimulate hair growth, tea tree oil can help with dandruff, while lemon oil can help with an oily scalp.

Pour into a spray bottle for easy application.

How to Use Wet/Dry Shampoo

Shake the spray bottle before each use. Spray on roots or oily parts of hair. Let dry and style as usual.

Hair Growth Home Remedies (Easy Steps)

If you would rather not spend a lot of money on hair products that claim faster hair growth, look in your kitchen cupboards for at-home remedies. Common food ingredients can assist in hair growth. While you are using these treatments, you should also eat certain foods and reconsider your haircare routine, to improve strength and reduce breakage and split ends.

Hair Growth Home Remedies (Easy Steps)

Oils
According to Mary Greenwood-Robinson, author of "Hair Savers for Women," a lack of moisture can slow hair growth and lead to breakage. Many shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfate, a chemical that acts as a detergent. To increase growth, reduce your shampoos from every day to every other day or every three days to increase oil production. Rinse hair with warm water followed by cool water on the days between shampooing. Reducing the amount of stress on hair allows it to grow faster and healthier.

Hair needs vitamins and minerals to grow. Take vitamin supplements that contain vitamin E, or apply it topically to the scalp. Olive oil contains vitamin E, which is found in many popular hair growth treatments and conditioners. Olive oil provides a natural shine, and can also repair damaged and dry hair. Heat 5 tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave for 1 minute, or until warm. Use your finger to test the oil and make sure it isn't too hot to use on your scalp. Pour the oil into your hands and massage it into your scalp. Let the oil sit for one minute, followed by rinsing it out with warm water and shampooing as usual. If you cannot use olive oil, Castor oil is an alternative that provides the same benefits as olive oil. To use Castor oil, follow the same instructions as the heated olive oil treatment.

Protein
Increase your protein to add nutrients to your hair. Protein promotes scalp circulation, a key factor in hair growth. Protein also helps build muscle and repair tissue, and can be found in fish, eggs, nuts, poultry and red meat. Eat salmon, mackerel and anchovies, as they are rich with protein. Chicken also provides the same nutrients, but the skin must be removed to avoid consuming high amounts of saturated fat. Macadamia, cashews and almonds are just a few nuts high in protein, and eggs with the yolks removed are also a source of this nutrient. Red meat is also high in protein, but loaded with saturated fat. Reduce your saturated fat intake by making sure your beef is extra lean.

Hair Masks
Eggs, avocados and honey provide moisture and stimulate the scalp by promoting circulation. For honey remedies, pour 2 teaspoons of honey into your hair and massage your scalp. Let it sit for 10 minutes and shampoo it out.

To use eggs as a hair growth remedy, crack three to four eggs and beat them until the mixture is a solid yellow. Coat your hair with the egg mixture and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, followed by thoroughly washing the mixture out.

To use avocados on the hair, remove the core and peel the skin off, and mash the avocado in a bowl. Evenly spread the avocado paste over the hair from root to ends, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes followed by rinsing it out.
