What is Jin Shin Jyutsu?
Jin Shin Jyutsu is a Japanese medical art of healing that seeks to balance the energy in the body, mind, and spirit through the use of pressure points and our hands. Like most acupressure techniques, the philosophy behind it is to relieve the negative pressure and build up of blocked meridians and pathways of the body so that energy can flow freely and in perfect emotional balance.

Study proved that Jin Shin Jyutsu provided relief to cancer patients
By reading this one might wonder if this Japanese healing technique actually works or not. Some may write it off as hocus pocus. Or even bogus but Jin Shin Jyutsu actually works and this was proved by a study in 2012 at the Markley Cancer Center Research Day as proving stress relief and improvement in health in no less than cancer patients.

Positive results in all 159 patients
The study was carried by Jin Shin Jyutsu integrative practitioner Jennifer Bradley who practices at Markey. The study involved 159 cancer patients who showed signs of improvement from the side effects of cancer treatment after every session. She followed the technique and its philosophy with positive results.

Pain stress and nausea decreased
After every session, Bradley asked her patients to make an assessment of their symptoms of nausea, stress, and pain and rate it on a scale of 1-10. 0 represented no symptoms. The study observed that in every session, patients showed remarkable improvement in all areas of pain stress and nausea from the very first visit and all other sessions thereafter. On average, the mean decrease was found to be 3 points for pain and 2 points for stress and nausea.

Encouraging results for further study
Bradley remarked that she was extremely encouraged and pleased to see the incredible improvements that patients exhibited in the areas of discomfort regardless of age, sex, and extent of diagnosis. “It is encouraging to note that Jin Shin Jyutsu made improvements in these areas without adding additional unwanted effects that so often occur with medication interventions.”

In every session, patients receive light touches on 52 energy points that are referred to as energy locks including the fingers, toes, and midpoints of upper arms, calves, lower legs. The process was done over the clothing of the patients and none needed to remove any clothing at all.

The results improved in the treatment room
Every session was performed at the Jin Shin Jyutsu room of the Chemotherapy outpatient clinic in the hospital. The study also observed how the highest results and best improvement were observed in the treatment room where there were longer sessions. The results encouraged Bradley who will now conduct further research with more parameters involved such as location and duration of services. Patient’s records will also be accessed to evaluate the changes in the medication received for cancer and the management of pain, stress, and nausea.

Helpful for improving quality of life for cancer patients
According to Bradley “The American Cancer Society has noted that quality of life is an issue for all cancer patients; those undergoing treatment, late stage patients, and cancer survivors, there is a need for additional research to develop evidence-based interventions that have a positive impact on the quality of life for all of these individuals without adding to their burden. “

She feels that Jin Shin Jyutsu shows huge promise in the area of pain and side effects management for cancer patients so that their health improves as well as their emotional well-being.
